Do I need to buy a power adapter for my appliances when going to another country?

I am considering going to Cuzco, Peru this summer, and last summer when I went to France none of my small appliances (hair straightener, laptop etc.) worked. Of course my more "natural" French friends thought it was very funny that I couldn’t straighten my hair, but I would like to be able to use my appliances this trip. So what do I have to do? Where do American appliances work? Will I have to buy an adapter? And if so, what kind? Thanks!!
