I am interested in turning my small time hobby of gardening into a bit of a career. Are there classes, certifications, training that I can take in order to become an expert on plants, trees, etc? I’d like to have a deep knowledge of the various kinds of trees, shrubs, flowers that work in different climates, how to best plant and maintain them, to design landscapes with a variety of well-coordinated plants, etc. Should I try to become a certified arborist? Where do I start exploring this potential new career direction? Thanks.

The neighborhood is rife with cats & all of them want to mark my patio as their own. Some of my furniture out there isn’t the stuff you can just hose down either. Any suggestions that don’t include anti-freeze or a pellet gun? Thanks.

To completely know how materials are developed, let’s start from the fibers. Textiles begin as single thread-like fibers, which are then assembled, or “woven” into a textile. Intrinsically flame resistant fabric starts with FR fibers, which individually are flame resistant. The outcome of this, when woven, the fabric is flame resistant. Treated FR fabric takes on its flame resistance from a application to the textile. Non flame resistant textiles are are woven into a fabric, which is then made flame resistant by an application.

Years ago, there were industry struggles with flame resistant clothing applications that ‘washed’ off of the flame resistant garment}. This is not so much of a problem these days as process provides a ‘permanent’ application that will last the life of the garment. A garment is more likely to naturally wear out before it loses its flame resistance.

I am an avid birdwatcher and I have lots of feeders in my backyard (which the birds love). Unfortunately, predatory cats in the neighborhood have figured this out and they catch and kill the defenseless birds at my feeders. I believe birds have a right to life and if my neighbors are unwilling to keep their cats out of my yard, then do I have the right to kill their cats? What’s a good method of keeping neighborhood cats out of my yard?
